POLAND - MALBORK CASTLE (UNESCO)

Last Tuesday I received more 8 postcards. This time from Malbork Castle and Museum sent me by Muzeum Zamkowe w Malborku. Thanks a lot! A new town in my collection!

We can see 4 scenes from Malbork Castle and paintings.

The town of Marienburg grew in the vicinity of the castle. The river Nogat and flat terrain allowed easy access for barges a hundred kilometers from the sea. During Prussia's government by the Teutonic Knights, they collected tolls on river traffic and imposed a monopoly on the amber trade. The town later became a member of the Hanseatic League, and many Hanseatic meetings were held there.

A particularly fine example of a medieval brick castle, it later fell into decay, but was meticulously restored in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Many of the conservation techniques now accepted as standard were evolved here. Following severe damage in the Second World War it was once again restored, using the detailed documentation prepared by earlier conservators.
